Strategic Alignment
align data to goals
Are your data initiatives aligned with your business vision?
Many organisations need help bridging the gap between data and business outcomes. Simply gathering and analysing data is not enough. Your data plan has to be tightly aligned with your business objectives. The key to a well-developed and beneficial data strategy is to ensure that it has actually been driven to be created by the business need and that it's understood by stakeholders with its implementation smoothly interwoven into different business functions.
How do you ensure this alignment?
Define clear goals linked to data: Define and prioritise specific, measurable objectives beyond general aims like "increase sales." Then, identify your SMART goals and specify how much, by when, and for which products or customer segments. Connect data to decision-making by identifying the key business decisions that rely on data, whether it's 1st, 2nd, 3rd party, or AI-generated synthetic data. After you've organised your data, turn data insights into actionable strategies. For example, if your goal is to boost customer retention by 10% next quarter, use CRM data to identify at-risk customers and create targeted campaigns to reduce churn and increase repeat purchases.
Identify key performance indicators (KPIs): Develop KPIs that directly correlate with your business objectives and define their measurement frequency. These KPIs will help you track the effectiveness of your data initiatives and whether they are creating real value. For example, if you want to increase your sales, you may measure monthly recurring revenue and conversion rates as leading indicators¹. Additionally, you may measure the customer's acquisition cost and lifetime value as lagging indicators².
Identify Tools & Resources Required: Determine the tools and technologies needed to collect, calculate, analyse, and present data effectively. This may include data Viz tools, analytics platforms, and data storage solutions. Assess your team's skills and identify any training needs to ensure you have the right expertise or identify any HR skills gaps to pilot the tools.
Data Governance and Culture: Break down data silos to foster collaboration between teams. Moreover, encourage data literacy among teams so that employees can grasp the importance of data and utilise it to achieve the collective vision. Regularly Review and Adapt: Track the progress of your strategy towards your data-driven objectives by looking at the KPIs in their defined tracking frequency manner and identify any areas where adjustments are needed. Be prepared to adapt your data strategy to new challenges and opportunities. This might involve revisiting your objectives/goals, refining your data collection methods, or adopting new technologies.
¹ Lagging: When calculated based on historical data showing the past value generated by customers.
² Leading: When using predictive models to estimate the future value of customers (based on early behaviour, segmentation, etc.), it becomes a leading indicator for revenue and profitability.
